Pig farmers are controlled by the 'pig cycle', a key element of agricultural economics.teacup pig for saleIt goes similar to this: pigs are unsubsidised - the government doesn't 'help' producers just by buying surpluses or fixing prices in any other way, for example, so, when there's almost no pork around prices are good - good prices attract people into the industry, and so more pigs become available which means that customers can window shop for the cheapest, which drives pigmeat selling prices down - lower prices result in producers make less money from them pigs, and in an industry with nominal margins (difference between the cost of producing something and how much you are paid correctly) low prices easily force visitors to sell up - which leads to reduced supply and therefore increasing prices which again attract people back in pigs. During a slump in the late eighties / ahead of time nineties I went bust for a four year period just by supplying pigmeat into a depressed market from under-performing sows, even though my partner, working alongside which has a 'multiplication' (sow mating) unit broke even in eighteen months.
For those who have a small scale process, then marketing your own product may be the key to survival and profit - you control your product, can butcher / process and supply customers at a quality price, and will be capable of do so when conventional markets are paying peanuts. By tapping into a particular 'niche' (rare breed pork for instance), playing the 'local' card, and using Farmers Markets, the small producer can command the sort of premium prices that enable him to survive where others will fail. Similarly, the large (thousands of sows) integrators control all areas of production, from 'field to fork' - they've already maintenance departments, own their own personal feed mills and transfer fleets, and have slaughter facilities on their business portfolio - they will always be able to weather that storm.
If you're outside of this bunch of brands (and fewer and fewer farmers are), then you'll never earn money in this business: low margins per pig and then a volatile market will see compared to that. Although they are quickly gaining in recognition, they are still very unusual pets, and most family pets will not know how to properly care for them.
Pigs root. This is their natural behaviour and you ought to not try to discourage it. Rooting allows them to get essential health supplements from the soil, and from worms and acorns that they eat. It does mean that a pig is an unsuitable pet if you have a beautiful lawn, nevertheless!
Their high intelligence means that pigs require a lot of attention. If you leave them independently in the house often then you're likely to find your carpet rooted up, your houseplants scattered across the floor, etc. You can't criticise the pig for this: they're intelligent and societal animals, and need excitement.
A pot bellied pig can make the perfect family puppy, as long as you seek information. Being the only person in your neighbourhood to own a pig is incredibly cool, but also means that there's no one to show to for advice. Make sure you read up on the subject, and your pig will bring you nothing but good times!
